A couple weekends ago Gavyn had a high fever that I could not break. Anything that I can use to help prevent illness I use. I have humidifiers in all the bedrooms as I feel they are of great help to the dry air. Especially the dry winter air. We just moved into an older home, with wood floors and we have baseboard heating. The air is very dry and nothing is worse than that. On top of that I cannot stand itchy skin.

Another product I got to review was The Braun ThermoScan. I have never had an ear thermometer and will never go back. This has a pre-warmed tip which helps ensure accuracy time after time. This was so helpful and easy when Gavyn was ill that week. I like checking his temperature every 15 minutes or so to see if it's going up or down and there is nothing worse than waking a sick child to stick a thermometer under his tongue. This thermometer is used most by pediatricians and I will say that when we brought Gavyn to see his pediatrician that is what they used on him. It's so easy to use with just a push of the button. It has a memory so you can see what the last temp was and the results appear in seconds. It's a very reliable thermometer that I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone with children especially older children. It comes with a holder also.

The last product I received was the Vicks ComfortFlex InSight Thermometer. I actually had this thermometer when Gavyn was a baby and loved it. It was a wonderful thermometer for the rectal readings on infants and it was very accurate. The tip of this moves which is why it's called the comfort flex which makes it more comfortable to take those readings. It also has a color indicator for the temperature ranges. If the temp is normal it stays green, if there is a mild temperature it turns yellow and a high temperature is red. You can use this rectally, orally or under the arm. This thermometer also has a memory feature showing you what the last reading was. I love the memory feature because I'm very forgetful when it comes to numbers and I can just push the on button and there it is.

All of these products are wonderful products that any family with children should have. The ear thermometer is a must have for the older children, where as there InSight is great for infants who I believe should only have rectal readings but that is just my opinion. Here are some tips from Dr. Jennifer Trachtenberg, a New York pediatrician, to make this year’s cold and flu season a little more endurable for both children and parents

* Don’t get Mouthy with Me!

Replace your child's toothbrush frequently and keep it separate from other family members' brushes when sick. If penny pinching, try soaking it in mouthwash after each use.

* Mommy’s Dearest

Fever is often one of the first signs of the flu. When temperature-taking, reach for what’s trusted. The Braun ThermoScan Ear Thermometer, which is used most by pediatricians and moms, features a pre-warmed tip and guidance system to ensure consistent readings. Vicks digital thermometers, which are pocket-sized and great for on-the-go, have a large display that changes color to help parents identify a fever.

* Find a Little Teapot, Short & Stout

Try using a neti pot to loosen and rid mucus, thereby clearing nasal passages. Neti pots have been used in India for centuries as one of the disciplines of yoga. For nasal congestion in babies, consider using 2-3 drops of nasal saline drops in each nostril, which are gentler, to help loosen and clear mucus.

* Better than a Spoonful of Sugar

Soothe sore throats and help the medicine go down by gargling with salt water. This is the safest, least expensive way to reduce scratchiness and swelling in the tissues. Mix one teaspoon of salt per pint of warm water to create the gargle.

* Black & White and Read All Over

Before tossing out an old phone book or using it to prop a door, try propping something else. Lying down can worsen congestion and increase sinus pressure and pain. Place a phone book or two under your mattress at night to elevate the head and lessen over-night congestion. If you have an infant, you can also prop a crib mattress to create elevation.

* Bedside Manner

Humidifiers keep the mucus membranes of the throat and nasal passages hydrated, allowing the tiny hairs in the airway to work at expelling germs.
